SEATTLE – During the summer months, King County officials have a safety warning for everyone.
Officials are urging the public to use caution on rivers, lakes and the Puget Sound.
There were 30 preventable drowning deaths in King County in 2023. That annual estimate has held steady since 2019, when the number of preventable drownings nearly doubled from the previous year.
Experts say our region’s rivers and lakes are much colder and more dangerous than they appear.
In the past five years, 70 percent of preventable drowning deaths in King County involved drugs or alcohol.

A new state law allows undocumented immigrants to apply for professional licenses.
Those careers include multiple types of jobs. For example, both plumbers and medical workers need licenses.
Before the bill was passed, people who wanted a professional license needed a Social Security number.
Some jobs were reserved for people who are U.S. citizens. The new law eliminated those requirements.
Now, undocumented people can apply for IRS taxpayer identification numbers and use them for professional licenses.
